Background of the Study
Technical and vocational education (TVE) has gained prominence as a strategic tool for enhancing employability skills among youths, particularly in areas where traditional academic education has not met the demands of a dynamic labor market. In Dala Local Government Area, Kano State, TVE programs offer a blend of theoretical instruction and hands-on training that equips young people with the practical skills necessary for diverse employment opportunities (Usman, 2023). The focus on experiential learning and industry-specific training is designed to bridge the gap between classroom education and the technical competencies demanded by employers. This approach not only enhances individual job prospects but also contributes to regional economic development by creating a workforce that is better aligned with market needs.
The economic landscape in Dala is characterized by a mix of traditional industries and emerging sectors, necessitating a versatile skill set among job seekers. TVE programs are therefore tailored to meet these varied demands by offering specialized courses in areas such as manufacturing, information technology, and trade services. The practical orientation of these programs ensures that youths are not merely job seekers but also potential job creators, capable of initiating entrepreneurial ventures (Sani, 2024). In addition, the integration of apprenticeship and mentorship opportunities within TVE curricula fosters a culture of continuous learning and innovation, which is vital for maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly changing economic environment.
Despite these benefits, several challenges impede the full potential of TVE in enhancing employability skills in Dala. Limitations such as outdated training facilities, insufficient funding, and a shortage of qualified instructors hinder the delivery of quality education. Moreover, the rapid pace of technological advancement often leaves existing curricula behind current industry trends (Ibrahim, 2023). Consequently, there is an urgent need to critically assess the effectiveness of TVE programs and to identify areas for improvement. This study aims to explore the role of technical and vocational education in shaping the employability skills of youths in Dala, providing insights that can inform policy reforms and educational strategies.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized benefits of technical and vocational education in enhancing employability, youths in Dala face significant challenges that limit the impact of these programs. One of the primary issues is the misalignment between the skills taught in TVE programs and the actual needs of local industries. Many training institutions continue to use outdated curricula and methodologies that do not incorporate the latest technological advancements, leaving graduates underprepared for the modern workforce (Usman, 2023). Furthermore, the scarcity of modern training facilities and high-quality technical equipment further exacerbates the gap between education and employment.
Another critical problem is the shortage of qualified trainers who possess both practical industry experience and effective teaching skills. This deficit compromises the quality of instruction and limits the potential of TVE programs to deliver job-ready skills (Sani, 2024). Additionally, socio-economic challenges, including limited funding and community support, further hinder the development and expansion of these programs. The resulting discrepancy between educational outcomes and industry requirements contributes to persistently high youth unemployment and underemployment in the region (Ibrahim, 2023).
These challenges highlight the need for a comprehensive evaluation of TVE programs in Dala. By identifying the barriers that impede the full realization of TVE’s potential, this study aims to propose targeted interventions that can enhance the quality and relevance of technical and vocational education. Ultimately, such improvements could play a pivotal role in reducing youth unemployment and fostering a more resilient, skilled workforce.
